Tentative Topic: Anorexia affecting teenagers.

Tentative Research: Find sources of what causes this disease and how it takes over their lives as well as the effects.

Rationale-: I wanted to explore this topic because I have witnessed a few close friends who have suffered from this disease. I want to know how anorexics think while they starve themselves, and how they learn to cover it up. I think that my essay will stop people, especially teenage girls, from skipping meals. The discovery in my essay could really help someone before they develop this life threatening disease.

I think you're definitely on the right track with your topic, Mary Katherine. You might try formulating a more specific research question, though, as the research agenda you outline is a pretty ambitious one. What, specifically, do you want to learn more about? Oh wait--reading further I see you've asked a more specific question (it looks like you're interested in "getting inside the head" of a person whose suffering from anorexia...that's a bit more do-able I think :).

Remember, in this essay you're not making an argument, so you'll want to avoid trying to convince teenage girls outright to avoid skipping meals--but your essay might certainly convince them that this is dangerous in more subtle ways.

You might begin by asking the question, "What would teenage girls go to such lengths to stay thin?"--what role does the media play? How are cultural standards of beauty and thinness different in other places around the world? How have standards of beauty and thinness changed in these places now that the media has become "globalized." Is anorexia a relatively "new" disease, or has it existed for a long time? Is anorexia a problem everywhere, or only in some places or cultures? Why is this? In researching one or more of these questions, you might draw upon your own experience of having friends who suffered from this disease. You might follow up by asking if what you learned about the disease (it's variouscauses, etc.) help you to empathize with those who struggle with it?
